Abolicionista estadounidense. En la década de 1830 participó activamente en la Sociedad femenina antiesclavitud y en 1838 colaboró con William Lloyd Garrison en la organización de la Sociedad de no resistencia de Nueva Inglaterra. Su larga carrera como oradora política le trajo celebridad nacional, en parte porque se dirigía a públicos mixtos (de hombres y mujeres). En 1845 se casó con Stephen S. Foster (1809–81), destacado abolicionista que se unió a su gira de conferencias. En la década de 1850 agregó la sobriedad y los derechos de la mujer a los temas de sus conferencias.
